Multi-Phase Extraction (MPE) Pilot Test
As part of Remedial Action Plan, a multiphase extraction pilot test (MPE) is planned, that will include the application of vapor extraction to enhance recovery of light non-aqueous phase liquid petroleum (LNAPL) from selected recovery and monitoring wells within Glenwood Dr. and on one private property. The method of extraction will include pumping from the individual wells on a 5-day 24-hour cycle.
Equipment including, sound barriers, equipment trailer, a pump, generator, holding tank (frac tank), and pipes necessary for the extraction process of liquid and vapor will be sited in the cul-de-sac at the end of Walker Road near the UMT open space. Above-ground pipes will be located along the curbline of Walker Road and Glenwood Drive to each selected well and will remain the duration of the test. The activity will include collection of extracted LNAPL and water on site, which will be periodically transported offsite for disposal. The MPE pilot test equipment will be housed in a trailer and surrounded by acoustical panels/sound barriers.
Mobilization is scheduled to begin the week of September 14th, and work is anticipated to last approximately 35 days, and to conclude, at the latest, by the end of November
The MPE pilot test aims to measure the effectiveness of the MPE remediation method; to recover petroleum product from groundwater; further prevent contamination from migrating; and to meet Pennsylvania remediation standards. Information collected from the MPE pilot test will inform design of additional remediation efforts and selection of the final remedy.
To minimize sounds generated by the MPE pilot test equipment, SPLP worked with acoustic engineers to design acoustical panels/sound barriers and other sound mitigation efforts, which will be installed prior to the MPE pilot test commencing, to minimize sound to the extent practicable.
There will be a lane closure on Glenwood Drive between Walker Road and Spencer Road as well as traffic controls on cul-de-sac portion of Walker Road. Signage will be placed to assist with traffic flow.
The worksite will be monitored 24/7. Work crews will be attending to the selected wells at various intervals throughout the 24-hour period.
The Council Rock School District has been notified, and they have indicated that they will utilize the bus stops located at the intersection of Crestwood Road and Spencer Road/ and the intersection of Crestwood Road and Walker Road.
The work is being completed under the oversight of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection in accordance with the Act 2 regulations, as part of our response to the pipeline release.
